Examining English Ability-Grouping Practices by Aligning CEFR Levels with University-Level General English Courses in Taiwan

In higher education in Taiwan, mandatory general English courses like Freshman adopt ability-grouping practices to assign students classes of different proficiency levels. However, little research has explored the efficacy criteria and standardized language-proficiency description for Thus, this study recruited 806 Taiwanese undergraduates from advanced, intermediate, basic levels take Oxford Online Placement Test (OOPT), compared their scores on Joint College Entrance Examination subject (namely General Scholastic Ability Test, GSAT) with OOPT. The findings indicated that criterion was effective classify into three groups A positive relationship between GSAT OOPT identified. clear trend, but some overlapping correspondence, displayed class Common European Framework Reference derived scoring report. Pedagogical implications suggestions future studies are provided.
